What it Means

A donor-advised fund is a charitable giving vehicle administered by a third party and created for the purpose of managing charitable donations on behalf of an organization, family, or individual. A donor-advised fund offers the opportunity to create an easy-to-establish, low cost, flexible vehicle for charitable giving as an alternative to direct giving or creating a private foundation. Donors enjoy administrative convenience, cost savings and tax advantages by conducting their grant making through the fund. The maximum tax deduction is received by the donor at the time of the gift, therefore the foundation administering the fund gains full control over the contribution, granting the donor advisory status. As such, the Asbury Foundation is not legally bound to the donor, but make grants to other Asbury or other public charities upon the donor's recommendation.

How It Works

  1. You transfer cash, securities or other appreciated property to be held by the Asbury Foundation
  2. You can periodically make requests for distribution of the funds to any 501(c)3 organization
  3. The Asbury Foundation will evaluate the request and determine if it is appropriate and make the distribution

  • Have advisory privileges over the fund, along with the family members you designate, so that you can recommend distributions to support specific areas of Asbury.
  • Take a federal charitable income tax deduction for the value of your gifts in the year they are made. There is no capital gains tax due on appreciated assets, and the gifts may reduce your gross taxable estate.
  • Have influence in how your gift will be used and support Asbury in the way you intended when you are gone.
